William C “Bill” Hugenberg Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 22, 1946, (the firstborn of six) to Dr.William C. and Dr.Janet Braunlin Hugenberg and died on March 4, 2024 at the Grand Junction VA hospital. Bill grew up in Rochester, Minnesota and in Portsmouth, Ohio and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1964, lettering in football.
In 1966, Bill was selected as the UM undergraduate to spend 2 weeks in the Soviet Union to experience its post-WWII economy first hand. In 1968, Bill graduated Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from UM, received a four-year Ford Foundation fellowship to the University of Chicago’s graduate school of Soviet Studies as well as being admitted to Harvard Law School. In June 1968, Bill received his draft notice.
Bill enlisted in the Army, finishing first Basic Training, AIT, and OCS, thereby earning a Regular Army Commission as a Second Lieutenant & allowing him to choose his MOS .
After training as a U.S. Army Counterintelligence Officer at Fort Holabird, Maryland, LT Hugenberg manned a Counterintelligence Command (C.I.C.) resident office in Bad Kissingen, Germany, for three years before going to Fort Huachuca, Arizona, where he completed the Military Intelligence Officers’ Advanced Course, served as Company Commander, a Battalion Executive Officer, and as a Resource Management Officer on the Commanding General’s staff.
In 1977, Bill resigned his U.S. Army Commission to join a financial services firm headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, progressively being promoted to Vice President and Director of Management Information Systems. In Fort Worth, Bill and his wife, Carolyn C. McGee raised their two children , Chuck and Kathleen. Meanwhile, Bill began marathoning, (NYC Marathon) road cycling (Ride the Rockies), playing soccer and discovering the American West through mountain climbing, river rafting, camping, and summitting 14ers & Grand Teton.
In 1990, Bill retired and joined the inaugural Everest Environmental Expedition. Upon his return, Bill enrolled at the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder, Colorado, with a concentrated in Federal Indian Law. He served as research assistant for textbooks on Indian Law and Water Law, and co-authored a still authoritative article on the Law of the Colorado River. After practicing for several years, Bill resigned to be Deputy Campaign Manager for the U.S. Senate Campaign of Gene Nichol, former Dean of the C.U. Law School. Bill met and then married C. M. “Chriss” Fischer. Bill remained in GJ where he remained politically active and became infamous for his numerous letters to the editor.
Bill is survived by his five siblings, his two children William C. (“Chuck”) Hugenberg III and Kathleen Michelle Hugenberg, both of Broomfield, Colorado, his wonderful Daughter in Law, Krista, and his four adored grandchildren, Charlotte, Hazel, Will, and Emerson, and by his beloved wife of 26 years.
