William Robert Hastings died at home in New City on March 1, 2024. He leaves behind a devoted family, including his wife, Sheila, his son Treavor, daughter Christine and grandson Jaxon. He’ll also be remembered fondly by a large extended family that includes his siblings, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and their respective families. Bill was born in Suffern, N.Y. on June 28, 1952, the eldest of four children to Betty Jean and Frederick Charles Hastings of New City. From 1972-1976, Bill served the United States Navy as an aviation electrician with Attack Squadron 176, known as the “Thunderbolts.” He was deployed aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and he traveled the world in service of his country. In a letter of commendation, dated April 9, 1974, his commanding officer wrote, “Above all, you have always been a good shipmate. Your pleasant personality and sense of humor have contributed immensely to the high morale presently enjoyed in the Electric Shop.” This was true of Bill throughout his life. After the Navy, he spent nearly 30 years with the Town of Clarkstown Parks and Recreation, retiring as a maintenance supervisor. Bill was brave. Bill was honest. Bill worked hard and always put others first. He was the kind of man that greeted every single person he met with a big, sweet smile. He was known for his genuine kindness and will be remembered always with deep love and affection. He will be honored with a Celebration of Life to be planned for later this year. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that a donation be made in his name to United Hospice of Rockland.
