Shirley Marie Camp passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 92 in Austin, Texas. She was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmommy, great-grandmommy and great-great-grandmommy. She instilled her values to generations, such as "family first" and "this too shall pass." Shirley was born November 3, 1931, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Jessie Wainwright Grubb and Dillon Kirk Grubb. She was a sister to Carol & husband Roy McGinnis, Diane & husband Billy Childress, and her brother Dillon Kirk, Jr.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Joseph Camp, Sr., and their children Theresa Marie, Michael Thomas, and Mark Edward; Her sister Carol McGinnis, brother Kirk Grubb, her mother Jessie Grubb, and father Dillon Grubb.
Shirley would argue her life began the day she met the love of her life, Melvin Joseph Camp, on a blind date – It truly was love at first sight. The two married months later on September 18, 1952, and spent 65 years building a life together and sharing seven children. Although she and her late husband believed Austin was "the Capital of the Universe," their family was blessed to have lived abroad in France, Japan, Ethiopia, and Thailand. The couple were avid dancers and "honky tonkers." It was commonplace for music to come on anywhere and find them dancing, until their final days. This shared love for music and dancing is still the core of their large family.
She is survived by her close-knit family, who will miss her immensely but will ensure her memory lives on; her children Patricia Berry, Catherine Jewel, Melvin "Joe" Jr., John & his wife Kara, her grandchildren Melissa & husband Jason Cones, Keith Chandler, Kelly Chandler, Kristin & husband Mitchell Morris, Matthew Jewel, Ryan Jewel, Amy Giles, Austin Camp, Madison Camp, Erin Camp & husband Kevin Coppola, Madelin & husband Mikey Wilkins, Caroline Camp; her great-grandchildren Jade Cones, Lacey Cones, Cole Wootton, Brodie Wootton, Kailey Rambo, Makenna Rambo, Madison Morris, Cameron Morris, Samuel Giles, Hadley Giles, Wren Giles, Rennyn Wilkins, Wylder Wilkins, Declan John Wilkins; her great-great-grandchildren Maysen & Jersey.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Cook-Walden/ Forest Oaks Funeral Home to begin at noon. Graveside service to follow.
