He was born to the Union of J.H. Starling Sr. and Thelma Starling on August 12, 1939 in Minden Louisiana.
James was a man who always had a smile and never met a stranger. He was always everyone's sunshine when he was in their presence. He was also part comedian and could make anyone crack a smile. He was retired from Lucent Technologies. James was a long time member of Brookwood Baptist Church. He was a talented woodworker and used that talent create decorative wooden crafts which he and his wife sold across the the Ark-La-Tex. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy Fan and enjoyed spending time with his family doing activities such as camping, riding motorcycles, and deer hunting. He was also an enthusiasts when it came to cars even after his retirement he began working at Courtesy Auto Sales. He loved to work on cars, talk about cars, and his favorite was attending the car races especially when it came to his favorite race car driver Jeff Gordon.
He was a family man who took pride in his children and grandchildren. He loved to sing silly songs and loved to show them the love he had for animals including chickens, ducks, cows, and dogs. James most favorite memory is swimming with the dolphins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ellen Adcock Starling; parents J. H. Starling Sr. and Thelma Starling; father-in-laws, Leonard Adcock and Sterling Ronald Bennett; mother-in-law, Ellen Pauline Bennett; son-in-law, John Beebe; sister, Sarah Trice; brother-in-law, Kent Robertson; nephew, Eric Robertson
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Stephanie Starling Beebe, son, David Starling and his wife Carol, his grandchildren, Ashley Gray and her husband Skeeter, James Lis and wife Ashley, Brandy Manuel and her husband Devin, Emily Hano and her husband Andrew, Zachary Starling, and Sarah Starling, Chelbie Hawthorne, great grandchildren, MaKayla Lis, Mercedes Lis, Christopher Lis, James Lis, David Lis, Maisy Hano, Oona Lea Manuel, Connor Morris Hunter Gray and Autumn Gray, brother, Jerry Starling and wife, Martha, sister-in-law, Pat Robertson, brother-in-law, Steve Adcock and his wife Noreen, sister-in-law, Rhonda Hulett and husband Charlie, nephews, Scott Robertson and his wife Sherry, Conner Hooker and wife Sarah, Jason Starling and Bobby Trice, and nieces, Christy Adcock-Williams, Lillian Hooker, Donna Trice, and Emma Starling, as well as numerous other family and friends.

As James was a member of the Gideon Association, the family request donations to be made in his name to Gideons International.
