Irene attended Alamo Grade School, Ascarate Elementary and
graduated from Ysleta High School in 1960. She was a member of
The Indian Drum Corps and was true to the saying, “Once an Indian always an Indian.”
At 15, Irene was crowned Queen of Our Lady of Light Church. She had a grand gala, with her royal court, and made local news. At 18, she left for Los Angeles to work and attended Los Angeles City College studying Business Accounting. She returned home and worked at Levines, Zale Corporation, First City National Bank, and lastly El Paso Independent School District as a Purchasing Agent, where she retired in 2015.
As first born, she always looked after her younger siblings and taught them how to swing (dance) to oldies but goodies. During her early days she enjoyed bowling with her league friends and going out to dance. With her knowledge and experience she volunteered with the Business Affirmative program, teaching high school students skills necessary for the business world. She was an advocate for pets, caring for strays and supporting organizations dealing with cruelty to animals.
Her dearest moments were spending time with her family, especially
her nephews, nieces and their children. She always supported all
their efforts and continuously praised and offered words of encouragement. Irene, always considered others before herself. Her unselfishness and kindness were unique.
