While countless celebrities serve as the face of fragrance campaigns today, many forget that there are still stars with their own best-selling perfumes. Although everyone has their opinions about them, celebrity fragrances were all the talk in the late 90’s and 2000’s. From Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey to Fergie, many of us looked up to these superstars, almost as the “OG influencers”. If they advertised it, fans bought it. I mean, who wouldn’t want to splurge on their idol’s personally-designed scent? I can still remember topping off my velour tracksuit and Uggs (Motorola flip phone in hand, of course) with a spritz of Britney Spears’ Fantasy before middle school. What a time!
No matter if you’re supporting your favorite celeb or genuinely adore the scent, there’s no doubt that the fragrance industry has evolved over the years. Celebrity skincare and beauty lines have taken the spotlight. Nonetheless, with the recent popularity of Y2K style, should we expect celebrity fragrances to also take a turn? Considering Gen-Z celebrities and influencers like Billie Eilish and Addison Rae launching their own lines this year, we can’t help but wonder. In the meantime, we’ll embrace the nostalgia of it all as we share our top-ranked celebrity perfumes - old and new - on the market.
16. Private by Naomi Campbell
You can always count on Naomi Campbell to produce something of elegance. Not only is the bottle so sleek and unique, but the supermodel granted us a glimpse into her glamorous, private world when she launched her fragrance in 2015. With a fresh and floral vibe, Private holds notes of mandarin, roses, orange blossom, tonka bean, vanilla and musks. It’s the perfect scent if you’re looking for something desirable, fruity-forward and feminine.
11. GIRL by Pharrell Williams
Who doesn’t love a unisex perfume? Coming in at #11 is Pharrell Williams’ ironically-named fragrance Girl. The rapper and fashion mogul released the scent in collaboration with Commes des Garçons Parfum in 2014. Not only is the bottle collectable art itself, but was designed by Pharrell’s friend and legendary artist KAWS. “We had the best nose in Paris, I was working with the best brand—Comme des Garçons is your favorite designer’s favorite brand—so there was not much of a struggle, because I was working with the masters of the artistic universe,” Williams tells WWD in a 2014 interview. Designed by the best of the best, this is one of the most versatile woodsy scents we’ve come across. Fragrance notes feature neroli, lavender, white pepper, cedarwood and sandalwood. Although Girl is Pharrell’s only fragrance at the moment, we wouldn’t be mad if he decided to produce another!
