Harry was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He was the second son and third child of Ada Parker and Matthew Lewis, Sr. The untimely loss of his father marked his early life. He eventually relocated with his family in his early teen years to the Bronx, New York. Harry was a talented athlete and his high school years were distinguished by his skill as a competitive player on the basketball court as he achieved a number of accolades playing team sports.
Harry graduated from Food & Maritime Trade High School in 1964 and began a career as a pastry chef. He ventured to expand his knowledge in the culinary arts over the years, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to savor his delectable creations.
His departure will be felt deeply not only by his family but also by his community of friends and acquaintances. He’ll be fondly remembered as a man with his own brand of insight. He was a straight shooter, a fun-loving soul, a social charmer, a dedicated sports fanatic, and a confidante.
He is survived by his daughters Lisa Lewis, Harriet (William) Sterling, and Janae Lewis, whom he shared with his former spouse Barbara. His extended family includes his cherished grandchildren Jarrett, Chacole, Malique, Amari, and Niya, and great-grandsons Chase and Syire.
Harry is also survived by his sisters Mary (Bobby) McKnight and Lucinda (Frederick) Shamsideen Edwards. He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law Matthew (Angelina) Lewis, Jr. Harry also had a host of nieces and nephews who adored his words of wisdom and spirit. His absence leaves a void that cannot be replaced...he will be truly missed.
