April S. Lau was born on March 14th, 1956 to Elba (McGee) and Glen Lau in Beatrice, NE, and passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 1st, 2024 in Lincoln where she has lived since 1962. She graduated from Southeast High School where she enjoyed playing on the first women’s volleyball team as well as the softball team. She would continue to play in both of these sports for almost 10 years on various teams with friends from work and school. Friends described April as a true friend who would not only celebrate in the good times, but stand by you through the tough times and cry with you as well.
Bryan Hospital was where April began working part-time as a teenager and continued there for over 50 years. She attended Wesleyan University and then transferred to Bryan College and became a full time Respiratory Tech. She proudly rode with the first mobile heart team to all cardiac calls in Lincoln. Then she moved to the Cath Lab where she was a Cardiovascular Tech and finished her career at Bryan Medical Center entering cardiac data into the national data sites. This is required and used to compare to the top cardiac programs around the country.
Family was very important to April and she really dove into tracing our genealogy. She was a devoted daughter, sister, and “favorite aunt” to three nephews, or so she reminded them many times. Boy, was she proud of those three! Every friend would know about her nephews and their latest accomplishments, just as if they were her own sons. She was a great babysitter who could remove her hearing aids and still carry a colicky baby without any problem. Her only rule was “NO emergency room visits.” She also excelled in reading lips with her hearing troubles, so muttering bad words under your breath wouldn’t get passed her as she would say “oh, that’s a bad word”. As her nephews developed a similar passion for Husker sports, April would enjoy talking stats and players with them for years to come. When fantasy football came along, she used her nephews for drafting help which led to her team’s 5 Super Bowl wins. The extra pitchers of beer bought for the other teams on draft night may have helped, as well. April discovered the world alongside her parents as they traveled near and far. As her mother aged, April picked up the very important job of making the birthday dessert of choice for everyone. Her brothers are VERY thankful she perfected the Red Cake recipe.
In her spare time, April’s lifelong love of reading was evident. She called Gere library “her branch”. Her Kindle had a worn cover and was by her side as she passed. In lieu of flowers or memorials, she would love for you to donate to Lincoln City Libraries.
April is preceded in death by her parents, Elba and Glen Lau. She is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law: Steve (Beth) Lau, Scott (Jody) Lau; nephews and spouses: Michael (Sydney), Jason (Emily), Alex (Brittany); great niece and nephews Ellie, Gideon, and Dawson.
In honoring April’s wishes, her family will have a private graveside service and then proceed to enjoy Easter dinner together just as April hosted for many years.
